Chris Voss (Tactical Empathy)
Master Tactical Empathy, labeling, and mirroring techniques pioneered by former FBI hostage negotiator Chris Voss.
What is it?
Pioneered by former FBI lead hostage negotiator Chris Voss, Tactical Empathy is the active use of emotional intelligence to influence your counterpart. It acknowledges that humans are fundamentally irrational and emotional beings. By disarming their defense mechanisms through extreme listening, you can guide them to your desired outcome while making them feel like they are in control.
How it works
Mirroring: Repeat the last 1-3 critical words of your counterpart to encourage them to elaborate.
Labeling: Acknowledge their emotions explicitly ('It seems like you are worried about...').
Calibrated Questions: Use 'How' and 'What' questions to force them to solve the problem for you.
Accusation Audit: List every terrible thing they could say about you upfront to neutralize the negative.
Real World Example
Scenario:
Your boss just handed you a massive project with an impossible deadline of Friday.
I need this entire presentation finished and polished by Friday morning. No excuses.
Friday morning?
Yes, the board moved the meeting up. I know it's tight, but we need it.
It sounds like you're under a lot of pressure from the board to deliver this fast.
How am I supposed to deliver the quality the board expects if I only have 48 hours?
When to use this strategy
Perfect for high-stakes, emotionally charged situations, salary negotiations, or when dealing with a particularly stubborn or irrational counterpart.
Configure Scenario
